A Baleful Expression

Jug-eared Southampton starlet Gareth BaleSpeculation may be mounting as to who will own the contract of Gareth Bale by midnight tomorrow, but I can’t understand why either of the two clubs linked with him are the front-runners for his signature. In Patrice Evra and Gabriel Heinze, Man United already own the two best left-backs in the country. And while Lee Young-Pyo and Benoit Assou-Ekotto might not be the most accomplished number threes in the division, they nonetheless represent one of the few positions where Tottenham actually do possess some strength in depth.

If anyone needs a left-back it’s Chelsea. How Ashley Cole can claim to be the “best left-back of his generation” (I’m fairly sure I’m quoting his autobiography here), when he’s crap in the air, his positional play is shocking and he can’t kick a ball with his right foot, I don’t know.
